How to Switch Off Your Mind at Night (and Why You Can't Switch Off)
You're exhausted all day. You can barely keep your eyes open by dinner. But then your head hits the pillow, and you struggle to sleep.
Ping. The mind is wide awake.
Suddenly it's 2am and you're replaying a conversation from this yesterday or planning tomorrow, rehearsing an email, cringing at something you'd said - any number of irrelevant tasks at 2am.
You're not tired anymore. You're wired. And you have to be up in five hours which only makes sleep more difficult
If that's you most nights, I want you to know two things:
1) Not being able to sleep is a problem that can be solved, because it's not normal or natural to not be able to sleep.
2) You're not broken, but your mind needs cleaning.

Why the Mind Gets Louder at Night
Here's what's really going on. It isn't that your mind switches on at night. It's that everything else finally switches off.
All day, you're busy. Work, messages, traffic, screens. There's always something to look at, so you never have to notice the noise underneath.
Then the lights go out. The distractions stop. And for the first time all day, it goes quiet enough to actually hear what's been running the whole time.
The noise was always there. The silence just let you hear it.
All day, your mind has been taking things in, like a camera that never stops recording.
Every worry, every task, every small hurt. At night, with nothing new to look at, it starts playing the reel back. That pile is what keeps you awake.

Why Trying to Relax Makes It Worse
So you try to force it. Calm down. Stop thinking. Go to sleep, please... And it gets louder.
Telling a racing mind to relax is like trying to settle a shaken bottle by shaking it harder. The effort is just more movement. More thinking about not thinking. Another picture on the pile.
This is why the usual tricks only go so far. Counting sheep, an app, white noise, a podcast to drown it out. They can distract you for a while, like putting a blanket over a noisy machine. But the machine is still running underneath, and the moment the blanket slips, the noise is right there again.
You can't distract your way to a quiet mind. You can only empty it.

How to Switch Off Your Mind at Night
You don't fight the thoughts, and you don't try to outrun them - you let them go with our meditation method.
Not push them down. Not cover them up. Not pretend they're not there. Actually set them down, one at a time, the way you'd take off a heavy backpack you forgot you were still wearing.
This is what our practice is really about. Reflecting on what has piled up inside you, and then discarding it, bit by bit.
Many people find that as the pile gets lighter, the mind stops its fighting. And rest comes on its own, without being forced. Because underneath all that noise, your mind was never restless. It was just carrying too much to lie still.
One honest note. If you go night after night without proper sleep, or it's really wearing you down, please see your doctor. Sleep matters too much to leave to chance, and this practice sits alongside that kind of care, never in place of it.

Trying It for Yourself
You don't need to try harder to switch off your mind at night. That's the trap.
You need to carry less. And that is something you can learn.
If you're tired of lying awake with a mind that won't quiet, come and try it for yourself.
