"I Can't Meditate, My Mind Is Too Busy" - My Story of Change

Many people don't try meditation because they think "I can't meditate, my mind is too busy" - this one is for you.

I want to tell you where I started, because I think it might help someone who feels the way I used to.

Back when I was studying architecture, my mind never switched off. It ran and ran. And like a lot of people, I relied on things to quiet it down - anything to escape my own head.

For years, that was just how I got through the day.

I didn't think there was another way... I thought that was simply what my mind was, and that I had to manage it forever.

Thankfully, I was wrong :)

The First Time I Tried to Sit Still

I started meditating in my final year, right in the middle of my Masters thesis. As you can imagine, it was an already intense period of my life.

And I was "terrible" at it.

I honestly could not sit for more than ten minutes. My mind was overflowing. Suddenly, everything I needed to do would rush into my mind, along with all kinds of random nonsense and my mind was flooded with thoughts.

If you've ever tried to sit quietly and noticed your thoughts increasing, you know exactly what I mean.

So if that's you, please hear this - that does not mean you can't meditate. It means you have a lot piled up inside (like the rest of us).

The noise is "normal", but it doesn't have to be that way. It's the very thing we help you to clear.

What Actually Changed

I kept going - and I made my mind up from day 1 I would go to the end no matter what, because I could no longer live with my mind. It wasn't perfect, or in a straight line - but I kept going...

Tears of gratitude well up in my eyes, because something kept my here.

These days, my longest sit in one go is over four hours. I'm not telling you that to boast, or for you to do it, it's to just show you how much I've changed. I'm not the same person that couldn't sit for ten minutes anymore.

With consistency, my mind transformed. My mind is so focused now, in a way I didn't know was possible. The heaviness I used to carry with me everywhere - that there was no escape from - got lighter over time.

Most days now, I wake up genuinely happy and grateful, full of energy. I didn't even know what gratitude meant in the past!

And I didn't add any of that into my mind, or learn anything new, or read more books, or listen to more motivational talks - I learnt to let go of who was not me to find who I truly am.

It Was Never About the Breathing

For me, meditation has nothing to do with breathing exercises, or music, or soothing sounds. Those things can calm you for a moment, but the moment passes and the countless thoughts are still there.

This is different. It's about letting go of everything false you have gathered over a lifetime, until you find the treasure that is within you - your true mind.

That's what I found under the chaos of what I thought was my mind. . It was never missing, it was just covered by so much garbage.

I know who I am now, and why I am here.

And I could not be more in love with that.

If you're burdened, suffering, or lost in search of truth, I want you to know that there is a way out, but it's not a quick fix. I've lived both sides of it and this side is a LOT better!

If You've Ever Thought "I can't meditate", My Mind is Too Busy"...

If you are like I used to be, and you're relying on something to get through your days and it has a real grip on you, please reach out to your doctor or a support service too. This practice can sit help you, but don't neglect medical help..

If any of my story sounds like yours, come and try it for yourself.

No need to expect the world, just start with wherever you are - even just ten restless minutes at a time.
